Public Justice and the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization announced today that a proposed settlement of a nationwide class action against CBS Broadcasting, Inc. and major toy retailers, if approved, will give cash refunds to consumers and effectively implement a nationwide recall of toy science kits, based on the popular “CSI” television drama series, that may contain asbestos. Requests for claim forms may be submitted at www.csitoyssettlement.com.

The Environmental Information Association (EIA) and the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) today announced the development of the Chrysotile Asbestos Fact Sheet (CAFS). The EIA and ADAO concluded, along with the majority of scientific agencies, that there is sufficient evidence to support that all forms of asbestos, including chrysotile, are carcinogenic and are responsible for asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma, laryngeal and ovarian cancers.

Alarmed that CBS Broadcasting, Inc. and Planet Toys, Inc. have refused to take appropriate action, Public Justice filed state and federal lawsuits on Friday in Los Angeles to force the companies to protect children and their families from further exposure to asbestos contained in toy science kits made by Planet Toys and licensed by CBS. The toy kits are based on the popular “CSI” television drama series, and tests of the kits’ fingerprinting powder found tremolite, one of the most deadly forms of asbestos.

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an organization dedicated to serving as the voice of asbestos victims, today announced that it is dissatisfied with Planet Toys issuing only a temporary “stop sale” limited to the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit. ADAO agrees with CBS’ recent request to Planet Toys to remove from all shelves and temporarily stop all sales of both the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit and the CSI Field Kit “until we are all in agreement with the testing, and most importantly, the product's safety.”

Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. announced that his agency is immediately stopping the sale of the CSI Fingerprint Examination Kit statewide, and is alerting consumers to return the item to the original place of purchase.
