The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization's 4th Annual Asbestos Awareness Day Conference was March 29th with a Remembrance Service on March 30th 2008. This conference was made possible with the support and collaborative efforts from Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University, and the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat (IBAS). Our mission is to provide the most advanced medical, occupational and environmental information available about asbestos related disease to individuals throughout the world.

Conference Speakers

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Peter Orris, MD. MPH, serves as Professor and Associate Director of the Great Lakes Center for Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health of the University Of Illinois School Of Public Health (a World Health Organization Collaborating Center) and is the Director of its Occupational Health Service Institute and Global Toxics Policy Program.  He maintains an active clinical and teaching practice in Occupational Medicine and is the chief of the clinical department at the University of Illinois Medical Center.  He is a Senior Attending physician in Occupational Medicine at the Stroger Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital) where he has been for close to 35 years.

2008 Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization Asbestos Awareness Day Honorees

Tribute of Hope - Aubrey K. Miller, MD, MPH, Senior Medical Officer & Toxicologist, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be presented with the Tribute of Hope Award for his quest to ban asbestos
Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award - Barry Castleman, ScD, Environmental Consultant will be recognized with the Dr. Irving Selikoff Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of his dedicated research into the social and medical impact asbestos has had on humankind.
Tribute of Unity - The Canadian Auto Workers will receive the Tribute of Unity Award for its global work to unite, educate, and empower asbestos victims and publci health workers
Tribute of Inspiration - John Thayer, former U.S. Capitol Tunnel Worker Supervisor and asbestos victim will be presented with the Tribute of Inspiration Award for being a bridge to hope and strength of victims of asbestos exposure
Alan Reinstein Memorial Award - John McNamara, mesothelioma victim, will be honored posthumously, with the Alan Reinstein Memorial Award for his commitment to advocacy to eradicate mesothelioma and offer support to patients and their families

ADAO Conference Mission Statement

TO PREVENT, DETECT AND TREAT ASBESTOS-RELATED DISEASES AND TRAUMA

The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization's 4th Annual Asbestos Awareness Day Conference will be held on March 29th and March 30th 2008 under the auspices of Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University.  This conference is made possible with the support and collaborative efforts from Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University, and the International Ban Asbestos Secretariat (IBAS).

This international conference will provide education and outreach to affected families, employers, employees and scientists throughout the world in  as part of the ADAO's continuing efforts to educate the public about the dangers of asbestos, ban its use and encourage research efforts to improve treatment options.  Prominent physicians, scientists, safety and health directors professionals and persons interested in asbestos will present current and up-to-date information regarding the status of asbestos in the United States, Canada and worldwide.
